Working Holiday Authorisation Programme 2017
Due to the high volumes of applications received in 2016, it has been necessary to update the application submission rules for the 2017 Working Holiday Authorisation (WHA) Programme. To that end, applications will be processed in two batches (subject to availability), and the following rules will apply:
Applicants wishing to travel in January may submit their application now, but must also send an email to email@example.com advising the INIS of your travel date. Please include this in the 'subject bar' of your email. If you are not travelling in January and you send your application prior to 1st December, it will not be considered.
Applicants wishing to travel between February and June 2017 are invited to submit their applications between 1st December to 31st December 2016. Any applications sent after this date, for this travel period, will not be considered, but may be considered in Batch 2.
In early January, eligibility will be determined on the applications received. Our website will be be updated to reflect the numbers received. A lottery system may come into play, again, depending on numbers.
Successful applications will be processed in mid-January and sent to our handling agent in Taiwan soon thereafter.
Batch 2 (Subject to availability)
Applicants wishing to travel between July and December 2017 will be invited to send their applications in June should the Programme be undersubscribed after Batch 1, or if places become available. Further details will follow once the final figures after Batch 1 be available.
Background information note
Applications for Working Holiday Authorisations (WHA) for young people who are holders of a Taiwanese passport are being accepted for processing by the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service (INIS). This Working Holiday Programme is intended for use by young adults who wish to stay in Ireland for an extended holiday, and is designed to promote an appreciation of culture and way of life. The initiative provides for an annual quota of 400 WHAs
The holder of an authorisation is permitted to engage in casual employment as an incidental aspect of their visit to Ireland. The authorisation will not confer the right to seek employment on anyone other than the named holder. The holder is also permitted to pursue short study courses for a period of no longer than six months. Applicants must have sufficient funds to support themselves for at least the initial part of the holiday or in the event of failing to secure employment. Immigration officials may request evidence of sufficient funds at the point of entry into Ireland. Successful applicants must obtain private medical insurance to cover any costs incurred in the event of an accident or illness while in Ireland.
To avoid any risk of misunderstanding or unrealistic expectations, applicants are advised that the market for short term casual work in Ireland is highly competitive and is adequately supplied from the large number of school leavers and other young Irish and EU nationals looking for work. Notwithstanding the issue of a WHA, applicants will be subject to normal immigration controls at the point of entry. All holders of an authorisation who wish to remain in Ireland for more than 90 days must register with the Garda National Immigration Bureau and pay the applicable registration fee.
